Radon

Radon is a naturally occurring, inert, radioactive gas. It’s odorless, tasteless and cannot be detected with the human senses.

Radon is a natural breakdown of uranium in the soil. In the form of a gas, it moves through the ground and into a home through cracks and holes in the foundation.

Radon decays in several steps to form radioactive isotopes or Radon Decay Products (RDP’s). It is these products that when inhaled can deliver a dose of radiation to the lungs. It’s the Surgeon General of the Untied States that warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today.

Radon gas is measured in Picocurie’s per Liter (pCi/L). The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection considers 4 pCi/L as an elevated concentration.

In testing for Real Estate transactions, House to Home Inspection Services utilizes a charcoal canister. This small passive device is filled with activated charcoal and exposed for a short term (2-7 days). It is then sent to a qualified laboratory and analyzed with results back within a day or two after being received.
